How to format and submit a story for the Pronoun Dressing Room

Step 1

Find a chunk of the text that has all the requirement elements. Occasionally I tweak the text a bit to fit something in; the possessive pronoun isn't used much so can be hard to find. For this example, we'll use the small intro text written by underneathbubbles

Hello! Today I met a [person] who goes by [name]. [Subjective] has/have a wonderful personality. That smile of [possessive] really makes me happy. I could talk to [objective] all day although [subjective] doesn't talk about [reflexive] much. I wonder if [possessive determiner] day has been wonderful. I hope so!
Step 2

Format the chunk of text for HTML. Basically, put your paragraph tags (<p></p>) and replace the special characters with their encoded counterparts.

<p>Hello! I hope so!</p>
Step 3

Start with the name. Fire up your search and replace and replace all instances of the name (ie:// Alice in Alice in wonderland) in the text with <span class="name"></span>. You don't have to worry about case for the name because I leave it as the user entered since some people are very attached to how their name is written.

<p>Hello! Today I met a [person] who goes by <span class="name"></span>. [Subjective] has/have a wonderful personality. That smile of [possessive] really makes me happy. I could talk to [objective] all day although [subjective] doesn't talk about [reflexive] much. I wonder if [possessive determiner] day has been wonderful. I hope so!</p>
Step 4

The other elements. Replace the other elements with their appropriate span tags. With these, you're going to have to add in the case classes as well. The easiest way to do this is to use a case sensitive search and replace.

Element Example Uppercase lowercase
Subjective She <span class="subjective firstupper"></span> <span class="subjective lowercase"></span>
Objective Him <span class="object firstupper"></span> <span class="object lowercase"></span>
Possessive Determiner Their <span class="possDet firstupper"></span> <span class="possDet lowercase"></span>
Possessive Pronoun Hers <span class="possPro firstupper"></span> <span class="possPro lowercase"></span>
Reflexive Himself <span class="reflexive firstupper"></span> <span class="reflexive lowercase"></span>
Person Girl <span class="person firstupper"></span> <span class="person lowercase"></span>

<p>Hello! Today I met a <span class="person lowercase"></span> who goes by <span class="name"></span>. <span class="subjective firstupper"></span> has/have a wonderful personality. That smile of <span class="possPro lowercase"></span> really makes me happy. I could talk to <span class="object lowercase"></span> all day although <span class="subjective firstupper"></span> doesn't talk about <span class="reflexive lowercase"></span> much. I wonder if <span class="possDet lowercase"></span> day has been wonderful. I hope so!</p>
Step 5

Dealing with the verbs. Search through the text and bracket all the singular case verbs with <span class="singular"></span> and immediately behind it put in <span class="plural hidden">(the plural case of the verb here)</span>. So "was" ends up looking like "<span class="singular">was</span><span class="plural hidden">were</span>"

<p>Hello! Today I met a <span class="person lowercase"></span> who goes by <span class="name"></span>. <span class="subjective firstupper"></span> <span class="singular">has</span><span class="plural hidden">have</span> a wonderful personality. That smile of <span class="possPro lowercase"></span> really makes me happy. I could talk to <span class="object lowercase"></span> all day although <span class="subjective firstupper"></span> <span class="singular">doesn't</span><span class="plural hidden">don't</span> talk about <span class="reflexive lowercase"></span> much. I wonder if <span class="possDet lowercase"></span> day has been wonderful. I hope so!</p>
Step 6

Browse through and look for other gendered words (ie://uncle, mother, etc...) and tweak as necessary. If you aren't certain how to tweak them, just make a note that they need to be changed.

Step 7

Add the source at the end. <p class="textSource">The complete original text can be found at <a href="url-here" target="_blank"> Site name here</a>.</p>

I could talk to <span class="object lowercase"></span> all day although <span class="subjective firstupper"></span> <span class="singular">doesn't</span><span class="plural hidden">don't</span> talk about <span class="reflexive lowercase"></span> much.
